Head of Commercial Operations

Jobs like this involve leading several Underwriting teams to contribute to RSA’s profitable growth ambitions and deliver the underwriting strategy in an effective, cost-efficient way in line with business needs and performance expectations. 

You will spend most of your time developing and implementing operational plans, monitoring and reporting business performance, managing stakeholder relationships and guiding and developing your teams and team leaders. 

You will be office based (Dublin and Galway) working face to face with your team leaders daily and also spending time with other leaders in Pricing & Portfolio and Sales & Distribution. You will have experience of developing business plans and have strong leadership skills.  

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning and managing (team/department/unit) business operations and resources in line with agreed performance targets, service standards, budgets and wider business and change objectives 
  • Monitoring team/department/unit operational and financial performance and take timely and appropriate action to address issues arising. 
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with other business areas and functions to maximise the effective operation of the team/department/unit. 
  • Agreeing and organising the production and reporting of business information required to support and inform other business areas and activities e.g., on market trends. 
  • Supporting and encouraging the identification and implementation of appropriate new and/or better ways of doing things to improve service and/or efficiency.  
  • Maintaining an effective and proportionate business control environment in line with internal policy and material external legislative and/or regulatory requirements. 
  • Recruiting, managing, coaching, developing, and motivating the team/department/unit to ensure delivery of the required standards of performance now and in the future. 
  • Building and developing the Customer Proposition for different lines of business/customer segments. 
  • Enhancing and improving the customer experience through continuous improvement of service. 
  • Delivering change to drive forward the Underwriting Excellence agenda. 
  • Building and maintaining close working relationships with other key functions such as Commercial Portfolio & Pricing, Sales & Distribution and Claims. 
  • Having a working knowledge of the markets in which RSA operate including Broker key customer relationships. 
  • Key role in cross functional forum e.g. complaints, consumer risk 
  • Create a great place to work through employee engagement initiatives measured through employee survey scores. 

 

Requirements:

  • To maintain effective organization & resourcing of the team. 
  • Implement a balance scorecard to manage Underwriter performance (Financial, Quality and Productivity) 
  • To identify & maximize opportunities for the profitable development of the business through involvement in new business pitches.  
  • To have a full understanding of relevant legislation and market agreements / developments. 
  • To always adhere to Underwriting Policy & Best Practice. 
  • To hold or progress towards the ACII qualification with CIP minimum accreditation.  
  • 10 years’ experience in a senior leadership role 
  • Proficiency required in MS Outlook, Word, Excel & the Underwriting applications.  
  • Complete the appropriate annual CPD requirement as defined by the Financial Regulator and / or the professional body to which you are affiliated. 
  • Shape & deliver Underwriting strategy. 
  • Contribute to the overall company strategy.

  • This role is subject to the Fitness and Probity Standards (“The Standards”) , issued under Section 50 of the Central Bank Reform Act 2010 and any subsequent amendments. The role holder must ensure they are fully aware of the Standards and in a position to fully always comply with them.
