Great role for a Portfolio Technical Underwriter to join our established Underwriting team in Dublin.
As Technical Underwriter, this role will involve the Underwriting and Product development of one of the largest Van Portfolios in Ireland. RSA is the insurer for several large Commercial Motor (Van) Portfolios and this role will be a key role in the development of these portfolios.

This role reports into the Motor Product Manager as part of the Personal Lines Underwriting Portfolio Team and will work closely with the Personal Lines Pricing Team and Director of Personal Lines Pricing and Underwriting to develop underwriting and pricing for this significant portfolio.

You will spend most of your time developing and reviewing key performance indicators for the portfolio, reporting, reviewing underwriting quality and portfolio business mix, considering underwriting and product criteria as well as business development opportunities. You will work closely with key stakeholders to develop opportunities to maximize performance of the portfolio making recommendations and leading underwriting change.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Work with Product Manager & Director of UW & Pricing to develop Commercial Motor (Van) underwriting philosophy, strategy, risk appetite, technical wordings and drive improvement opportunities for wordings, processes, pricing and strategy
  • Research and develop opportunities to improve the Van product to ensure a strong technical understanding of current and emerging risks, opportunities and customers, which will drive technical strategy, support underwriting excellence and good customer outcomes
  • Work closely with pricing, distribution and external partners to identify and develop appropriate pricing and underwriting opportunities to enhance portfolio performance
  • Development and analysis of business mix and portfolio trends
  • Monitor and review claims and liase with claims handlers for insight and underwriting quality improvement opportunities
  • Maintain Underwriting Licensing framework and provide underwriting guidance and advice to Underwriters and partners within authority
  • Assessing the impact of any regulatory or compliance frameworks on RSA’s Van proposition and identifying and implementing any required changes to ensure compliance is maintained
  • Maintain and develop appropriate technical Underwriting manuals, procedures, policy wordings and guides
  • Represent RSA externally at industry forums and in contact with key distributors
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with other business areas and functions to maximize the effective operation of the team/department/unit.
  • Assisting in the Underwriting activity of the wider Personal Lines Portfolio Team 
  • Alignment and performance of portfolio strategy
  • Quality of client/broker relationships and client feedback/satisfaction scores
  • Achievement of personal and team/department/unit performance targets
  • Personal and team/department/unit compliance with legal, regulatory and policy requirements


Requirements:

  • CIP, ACII or equivalent insurance qualification
  • Relevant 3rd level qualification
  • Based in Dublin with some travel to brokers and key partners 
  • Good Underwriting Technical capability and knowledge of Van Insurance – Broking or Insurer experience
  • Knowledge of Personal Lines Underwriting
  • Good financial acumen and analysis capability
  • Stakeholder management skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills

 

Regulatory Requirements:

  • This role falls within scope of the Minimum Competency Code (MCC) and requires the jobholder to have attained the status of ‘Qualified Person’ in the relevant function(s) i.e. i.e. personal lines, commercial lines and claims, or have a Statement of Grandfathered Status in the relevant function(s). The status of ‘Qualified Person’ can be achieved through attaining the qualification of Certified Insurance Practitioner (CIP), Accredited Product Advisor (APA or Associate or Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII or FCII). The jobholder must also comply with all CPD requirements as outlined in the MCC.
  • This role is subject to the Fitness and Probity Standards (“The Standards”), issued under Section 50 of the Central Bank Reform Act 2010 and any subsequent amendments. The role holder must ensure they are fully aware of the Standards and in a position to fully comply with them always
